Former Vice President and key opposition figure Atiku Abubakar has stated he is willing to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race under the African Democratic Congress if the party presents a younger, dynamic, and broadly acceptable candidate.
Atiku, a key member of the ADC coalition, made the remark in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday. He stressed the importance of generational renewal in the party and Nigeria’s politics, signaling his support for young leaders who can drive the country forward.
“I am ready to forgo my presidential ambition if the party presents a younger candidate who is vibrant and acceptable to Nigerians,” Atiku said, highlighting his commitment to the party’s unity and the nation’s future.
The announcement comes amid rising demands across Nigeria for political renewal and generational change, as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Political analysts suggest that Atiku’s position may shape the ADC’s strategic choices and could redefine its candidate selection process as the party prepares to challenge the ruling party in the next elections.
Moreover, Atiku Abubakar’s openness to change, highlights a wider shift in Nigerian politics, where veteran politicians are beginning to recognize the importance of empowering younger leaders.
