Security Operatives Sacked Over Corps Member Assault

The Anambra State Government on Wednesday, August 21, 2025, dismissed eight operatives of the Agunechemba community security outfit in Anambra State after they were found to have brutally assaulted a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, following an internal investigation prompted by a viral video of the attack.

The announcement was made on Wednesday at the agency’s headquarters in Awka by Mr. Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security. He said the dismissal followed a government probe into a viral video showing the operatives assaulting and allegedly stripping a corps member, actions he called “unprofessional, condemnable, and completely unacceptable.”

“This government will not tolerate any form of brutality, abuse of power, or unprofessional conduct by any security personnel,” Emeakayi said. “The dismissed officers will be handed over to the police for prosecution.”

The video of the assault sparked public outrage and condemnation from civil society groups, legal experts, and citizens. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) also described the incident as a serious violation of the victim’s rights. Meanwhile, Cyrus Onu, the lawyer representing the assaulted corps member, has called for full prosecution of the operatives and compensation for his client.

“We have written petitions to the Anambra State Government and the Attorney General of the Federation,”Onu stated in an interview. “We are demanding both criminal prosecution and compensatory damages. If our demands are not met within the stipulated legal timeline, we will pursue every available legal channel, including civil action.”

Emeakayi assured the public that the incident would mark a turning point in reforming community security in Anambra, with a renewed focus on discipline, human rights, and restoring public trust.

The government reaffirmed that any security operative found guilty of misconduct will be immediately dismissed and prosecuted.
