Nigeria experienced a widespread power outage on wednesday, after the national electricity grid collapsed, disrupting supply across multiple states.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the outage in a public notice on its official X account, reporting that the grid collapsed precisely at 11:23 a.m.
“Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 a.m. today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas,” the statement read.
While the exact cause of the collapse has not been revealed, grid failures are a frequent problem in Nigeria’s power sector, commonly attributed to aging infrastructure, inadequate investment, and system instability.
The blackout impacted key areas including the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Niger states, with similar outages reported in other parts of Nigeria.
Power generation and distribution companies are yet to announce a restoration timeline, forcing many businesses and households to rely on generators and solar systems.
This latest collapse adds to the growing concerns over Nigeria’s energy reliability, particularly as industries, hospitals, and educational institutions continue to struggle with erratic electricity supply.
As of the time of filing this report, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), responsible for managing the national grid, has not released an official statement about the incident.
