A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction stopping former President Donald Trump from removing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, allowing her to continue in her role while her lawsuit against the dismissal is underway.
The ruling, handed down by U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb’s ruling permits Lisa Cook to stay on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors for now, coming just days before the central bank’s next policy meeting on September 16.
Appointed under the Biden administration, Cook challenged her removal as unlawful, raising concerns over political interference in the traditionally independent Federal Reserve.
Trump’s legal team sought to delay the ruling to allow for an appeal, but Judge Cobb denied the request, citing the public interest in maintaining stability at the Federal Reserve during the legal process.
The court has not decided if the removal was legal, but the injunction is an early victory for Cook and shows the judge may have doubts about the Trump administration’s attempt to change the Federal Reserve’s leadership.
