Sports Federations Presidential Elections To Hold Today in Abuja

Presidential elections into various Nigerian sports federations are set to take place today at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, under the supervision of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

The polls come after weeks of stakeholder consultations and controversies surrounding the initial electoral process, which prompted the NSC to step in and ensure fairness and compliance with established guidelines.

One of the major elections to watch is that of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), where Victor Ochei, a former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, is seen as the likely winner. Ochei, chosen by the National Sports Commission (NSC) to represent sponsors and philanthropists on the NTF board, has supported tennis for many years through sponsorships and building sports facilities.

A sports stakeholder, Caleb Tsav, praised Victor Ochei for his efforts in promoting tennis, saying that his support for the Davnotch Open Tennis Championship and the mini-stadium he built in his hometown show his strong commitment to growing the sport.

Other federations, including the Kickboxing Federation of Nigeria, will also elect new leaders today. Prominent contenders in that race include Air Vice Marshal Batnan Frama, a former Director of Sports at the Defence Headquarters, and Grand Master Nelson Oluigbo.

Meanwhile, in the Gymnastics Federation of Nigeria, candidate Omowunmi Olalere has urged the NSC to ensure transparency and inclusion in the process, warning against the appointment of board members without due election procedures.

Today’s elections follow the nullification of previous polls held in September, which were canceled due to procedural irregularities and non-compliance with governance standards.

Stakeholders are hopeful that the fresh elections will produce credible leaders capable of restoring stability, accountability, and growth across Nigeria’s sports federations.
