The Queen Consort of the Alaafin of Oyo, Ayaba Abiwunmi Owoade, has urged Nigerians to engage in tree planting and reforestation, stressing that trees are crucial for sustaining life, protecting the environment, and strengthening local economies.
Speaking during the commemoration of the Ogun Pepe Memorial Week in Oyo town, the Queen highlighted the crucial role trees play in sustaining life and protecting the environment.

“We must plant trees to nurture our land, protect our future and leave a legacy for the next generations,” she said.
The event, which kicked off this week, honors the courage of the Oyo people who resisted the British colonial invasion in 1895 during the reign of Alaafin Adeyemi Alowolodu I. Known as “Ogun Pepe” for the sound of gunfire during the conflict, it has become a lasting symbol of Yoruba bravery and resistance against colonial rule.
She warned that widespread deforestation and land degradation across the country threaten environmental stability and urged citizens, communities, and government agencies to work together to restore the nation’s greenery.
The event also emphasized the importance of linking cultural preservation with environmental stewardship, a message the Queen said is vital for building a sustainable future.
Officials hope her appeal will encourage greater public involvement in tree‑planting and reforestation efforts throughout Oyo State and beyond.
