Ganduje Resigns as APC Chairman Over Health Concerns
Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, National Chairman of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has stepped down from his position, citing health challenges, party insiders confirmed on Friday.
Ganduje, who served two terms as Governor of Kano State, reportedly submitted his resignation letter to the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) late Thursday.
He has handed over his duties to the party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, in a transition described as immediate.
There are reports that President Bola Tinubu may have urged Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to resign, though this has not been officially confirmed by the presidency.
Ganduje’s resignation comes amid concerns about his health and speculation over internal party tensions.
Appointed as chairman in August 2023, he was tasked with uniting the party after a contentious election cycle but faced allegations of mismanagement and internal divisions during his tenure.
The APC is now considering permanent replacements, with names like former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and ex-Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura being discussed.
An emergency APC meeting is expected next week to determine the party’s next steps.
