ONE KILLED IN IBADAN-LAGOS EXPRESSWAY ACCIDENT, EXACTLY ONE WEEK AFTER DEADLY CRASH AT SAME SPOT

Another fatal accident has occurred on the ever-busy Ibadan-Lagos Expressway, claiming the life of a yet-to-be-identified man on Tuesday morning. The incident took place around the Soka axis of the expressway, a location already marked by tragedy just a week earlier when more than ten lives were lost in a multiple-vehicle collision.

According to information gathered by newsmen, Tuesday’s accident involved a Toyota Camry bearing Lagos registration number KRD 955 GJ and a stationary commercial truck that had reportedly been abandoned at the scene of the previous crash.

Eyewitnesses at the scene told reporters that the driver of the Toyota Camry was on high speed when he lost control of the vehicle, hit a culvert, and subsequently crashed into the stationary truck. The lone occupant of the vehicle was said to have died on the spot due to the impact of the collision.

An eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Tunde, described the accident as avoidable, blaming excessive speeding and the continued presence of the truck at the roadside for the fatal outcome.

“That truck has been there since the accident last week. We were shocked that no authority has moved it,” he said. “The Camry driver was coming very fast. He hit the culvert first, lost control, and then slammed into the trailer. He didn’t survive it.”

Another resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, lamented the frequency of road accidents along the Soka stretch, urging the government to intervene promptly.

“This place has become a danger zone. Something must be done. Why is a truck involved in a deadly accident still left there a week later?” he asked.

When contacted, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Oyo State, Mrs. Rosemary Alo, confirmed the incident. She stated that the crash occurred as a result of overspeeding, which caused the driver to lose control and veer off the expressway into the parked truck.

In her words:

“Yes, there was a fatal crash today (Tuesday) involving a Toyota Camry with registration number KRD 955 GJ and a stationary commercial truck with no visible number plate. The Camry was on top speed when it lost control and rammed into the stationary truck parked off the road at Soka.”

Alo further disclosed that the deceased’s body was recovered and deposited at the Adeoyo Hospital morgue by officers of the Sanyo Police Division, who were contacted by passersby. The vehicle was subsequently towed to the police station for further investigation.

The Sector Commander used the occasion to reiterate the need for drivers to strictly adhere to speed limits, particularly on highways notorious for accidents.

“This crash was preventable. We always advise drivers to slow down and be cautious, especially in accident-prone areas. Overspeeding remains a leading cause of fatal crashes,” she said.

She also called on motorists and logistics companies to ensure that broken-down or damaged vehicles are promptly removed from the highway to prevent further accidents. According to her, the FRSC has stepped up patrol and monitoring along the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway but requires greater cooperation from stakeholders and road users.

Tuesday’s incident marks the second fatal accident in as many weeks at the same Soka axis. The earlier crash, which occurred the previous Tuesday, involved multiple vehicles and led to the death of at least ten people, with several others injured.

The recurrence of fatal crashes at the same location has triggered concerns among commuters and residents, who are calling for increased traffic enforcement, better road safety signage, and the immediate removal of roadside hazards along the expressway.

As investigations continue, authorities are urging the public to remain alert and report any unsafe conditions or abandoned vehicles on major highways to the nearest FRSC or police office.
