Former Super Eagles winger, Okwuchukwu ‘Allen’ Waobikeze, has passed away.

The news of his death was confirmed on Monday by his brother, Eli Waobikeze, in a post shared on Facebook. According to the family, the former footballer passed away peacefully at about 7:34 p.m. Central Standard Time.

Waobikeze, popularly known as ‘Babaoo,’ was celebrated for his strong left foot, creative flair, and impressive ball control. Though he played limited roles for the senior national team due to stiff competition, he was a prominent figure in Nigeria’s domestic football scene.

He featured for top clubs such as Sharks FC of Port Harcourt, BCC Lions of Gboko, and Iwuanyanwu Nationale, now known as Heartland FC.

Announcing the death, his brother Eli wrote;

“On behalf of the Waobikeze family, I would like to announce the peaceful passing to eternal glory of my brother Allen Okwuchukwu Waobikeze.
He transitioned at about 7:34 p.m. CST.

We appreciate everyone who prayed, called, and visited. Every funeral arrangement will be posted. Please keep our family in your prayers.”

The passing of Waobikeze comes just days after the death of former Super Eagles goalkeeper and captain, Peter Rufai, marking a somber period for Nigeria’s football community.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
