President Tinubu Salutes Super Falcons After Dramatic WAFCON Semi-Final Victory Over South Africa

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, following their dramatic 2-1 victory over arch-rivals South Africa in the semi-final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) held Tuesday night in Morocco.

The thrilling encounter, which kept fans across the continent on the edge of their seats, saw the Falcons snatch a late winner to book their place in the final of the continental showpiece and move one step closer to a historic tenth WAFCON title.

Moments after the final whistle, President Tinubu released a statement praising the team’s outstanding performance, describing the victory as “well deserved” and “nothing short of superlative.”

The President commended the players for their resilience, skill, and representation of the Nigerian spirit on the international stage.

He said, “Well deserved! Congratulations to our Super Falcons. Your incredible #WAFCON2025 semi-finals victory over South Africa today was nothing short of superlative. It was a magnificent display of grit, talent, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit. You have made the nation proud. Keep soaring. Don’t stop until you bring the trophy home. Go for our 10th title. Nigerians worldwide are rooting for you. We are waiting to receive the cup.”

The victory was sealed in dramatic fashion after South Africa had equalised in the second half, threatening to push the match into extra time. However, in a moment of brilliance, Nigerian defender Michelle Alozie launched a hopeful long ball into the opposition’s box. The ball, curving through the air, sailed over everyone, including the South African goalkeeper, and nestled into the back of the net stunning the Banyana Banyana defence and sending the Nigerian bench into wild celebration.

The result not only extended Nigeria’s dominance over South Africa in WAFCON history, but also brought them within touching distance of a record-extending 10th continental crown.

The Super Falcons will now await the outcome of the second semi-final clash between tournament hosts Morocco and West African rivals Ghana to determine who they will face in the grand finale.

Nigeria remains the most successful team in the competition’s history, and fans across the country and the diaspora will be hoping for yet another triumphant outing in the final.

The final match is scheduled to take place later this week in Morocco.
