The Emir of Gusau, His Royal Highness Dr. Ibrahim Bello, has passed away at the age of 71, drawing tributes from across Zamfara State and beyond. The revered traditional ruler died in Abuja on Friday morning following a protracted illness.
Reacting to the news, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal expressed profound sorrow, describing the monarch’s passing as both a personal loss and a major blow to the entire state. In an official condolence message, the governor praised the late Emir’s life of service, leadership, and wisdom.
“I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of our father, His Royal Highness, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, the Emir of Gusau,” Governor Lawal stated. “He was more than a traditional leader; he was a pillar of wisdom, a father figure, and a symbol of unity for our people.”
The governor extended heartfelt condolences to the Zamfara State Council of Chiefs, the Gusau Emirate, the late Emir’s immediate and extended families, and the entire people of Zamfara State.
“His Highness’s passing is a huge loss for the people of Zamfara, the North, and Nigeria as a whole. He was a supportive royal father and a leader who dedicated his life to the betterment of our state,” the governor added.
A Life of Service and Dedication
The late Dr. Ibrahim Bello was the 15th Emir of Gusau, having ascended the throne on March 16, 2015. Over his decade-long reign, he earned widespread respect for his deep commitment to traditional values, peacebuilding, and the socio-political stability of Zamfara State.
Known for his calm demeanor, deep religious devotion, and unifying leadership, the Emir played a crucial advisory role to successive governments, including the current administration led by Governor Lawal.
Before his enthronement, the late monarch had a distinguished career in the civil service. He served as a Permanent Secretary in the old Sokoto State and later in Zamfara State, earning a reputation as a disciplined and effective administrator.
Governor Lawal, who spoke with deep emotion, revealed that the late Emir had been a confidant and a source of guidance for him and other leaders in the state.
“I have lost a confidant and a father whose wisdom guided me and many others in leadership. His counsel was always timely, balanced, and rooted in genuine concern for the well-being of our people,” he said.
The governor prayed for the repose of the Emir’s soul and asked Allah to forgive his shortcomings and admit him into Aljannah Firdaus.
News of the Emir’s death has triggered an outpouring of grief across Zamfara and northern Nigeria, with traditional rulers, religious leaders, government officials, and citizens mourning the loss of a revered figure.
Many describe the late Emir as a symbol of peace and a unifying force during times of political tension and insecurity. Under his leadership, the Gusau Emirate maintained its cultural heritage and played a stabilising role within the wider framework of the state’s development.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Gusau Emirate Council in accordance with Islamic rites.
As Zamfara mourns the passing of one of its most respected sons, many say Dr. Ibrahim Bello will be remembered not only for his royal heritage but for his humility, intellect, and unwavering dedication to public service and humanity.
