APC Demands Kano Elections Be Scrapped Over Thug Violence and Voter Chaos

The All Progressives Congress has called for the immediate cancellation of the Shanono/Bagwai Constituency bye-election and the Ghari Constituency rerun in Kano State, citing widespread violence and chaotic disruptions that have marred the electoral process.

In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, the party condemned the elections, describing them as “plagued by extreme violence and disruptions caused by armed thugs” at several polling units across the affected areas.

Morka pointed to reports from Shanono and Bagwai LGAs and Ghari Constituency, which showed that escalating violence forced voters to abandon polling stations, with security operatives unable to contain the chaos. He maintained that the situation made a credible election unachievable.

The APC argued that allowing the elections to proceed under such circumstances would effectively endorse electoral violence and compromise the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.

“Continuing with the Shanono/Bagwai bye-election and Ghari rerun amidst this wave of violence and voter intimidation contradicts the democratic principles of free, fair, and peaceful elections,” Morka stated. He warned that it could set a dangerous precedent for future electoral misconduct.

As a result, the party has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to promptly cancel both elections in order to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process and uphold the country’s democratic values.
