The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in the just concluded chairmanship elections held across Epe, Eredo, and Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Areas of Lagos State, following overwhelming support from voters in the respective communities.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) formally announced the results late Saturday night, July 12, at approximately 11:55 p.m., at the designated collation centres within each of the local government secretariats.
In Epe Local Government, the APC candidate, Ms. Surah Animashaun, was declared the winner after polling a total of 34,819 votes, far ahead of her closest challengers. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured 1,535 votes, while the Labour Party managed 675 votes.
The Returning Officer for Epe, Prof. Habeeb Sanni, while announcing the results at the Epe LG Collation Centre, confirmed that Animashaun met all legal requirements and garnered the highest number of valid votes.
“Having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of valid votes, I hereby declare Ms. Surah Animashaun as the duly elected chairman of Epe Local Government,” Prof. Sanni stated.
Similarly, in the Eredo Local Council Development Area, the APC candidate, Mr. Monsuru Akinloye, achieved a commanding win with 25,017 votes. His main opponent from the PDP received 424 votes, while no other significant figures were reported for other parties.
The declaration was made by Dr. Afolabi Onasanya, the Returning Officer for Eredo LCDA. He emphasized that the APC candidate fulfilled all electoral conditions as stipulated by law.
“Having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of valid votes, I hereby declare Mr. Monsuru Akinloye as the duly elected chairman of Eredo LCDA,” Dr. Onasanya announced.
In Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, the APC once again dominated the polls. The party’s candidate, Mr. Sesan Olowa, won by a significant margin with 59,342 votes. The PDP trailed behind with 740 votes, and the Labour Party received only 45 votes.
Mr. Bankole Oduntan, the Returning Officer for Ibeju-Lekki, made the official declaration at the collation centre, confirming Olowa’s victory.
“Having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of valid votes, I hereby declare Mr. Sesan Olowa as the duly elected chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government,” Oduntan said.
The elections in all three areas were characterized by large voter turnout in favor of APC candidates, reflecting the party’s continued dominance in Lagos State local government politics. Observers noted a wide margin of victory in each LGA, indicating either a strong support base for the ruling party or lackluster mobilization by opposition parties.
The peaceful conduct of the elections was praised by electoral officials, although some civil society observers have raised concerns over the extremely low numbers recorded for opposition candidates, suggesting a need for deeper analysis of voter engagement and party reach at the grassroots level.
With the chairmanship of Epe, Eredo, and Ibeju-Lekki LGAs now firmly under APC control, the party continues to consolidate its influence in Lagos State, especially in the eastern senatorial district. Analysts believe the results could have implications for future state and national elections, particularly in terms of local party structure, voter mobilization, and grassroots political strategy.
The newly elected chairpersons are expected to be sworn into office in the coming days, as preparations for governance and project execution begin in earnest across the three LGAs.
