The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has announced the suspension of its ongoing two-week warning strike.
ASUU’s National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, disclosed this on Wednesday during a press briefing in Abuja. He said the decision followed the outcome of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which lasted through the night and ended around 4:00 a.m.
Piwuna explained that the strike was initially declared due to the government’s delay in meeting the union’s longstanding demands. However, he noted that significant progress had been made following renewed engagements with government representatives on the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement.
According to him, while much work still lies ahead, the government’s decision to return to the negotiation table influenced ASUU’s move to suspend the strike.
“The NEC resolved to suspend the warning strike to acknowledge and reciprocate the efforts of students, parents, and the Nigeria Labour Congress, who intervened to ensure progress,” Piwuna said.
He assured that ASUU remains committed to defending the welfare of its members and ensuring the revitalization of Nigeria’s university system.
