President Bola Tinubu has named Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) from Kogi State as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. His nomination was made during Thursday’s National Council of State meeting in Abuja, where he was unanimously approved following the end of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure in October 2025.

Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga said Amupitan is the first Kogi and North-Central nominee to head INEC. Tinubu described him as a man of integrity and legal skill who will boost confidence in the electoral system.
Council members, including former presidents and governors, supported the nomination without objection. Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo commended Amupitan’s legal experience and service record, saying he would promote transparency and professionalism in INEC.
Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, will replace Mahmood Yakubu after confirmation, reflecting the government’s drive to strengthen electoral reforms and democracy.
