The Chinese government has cautioned the United States against interfering in Nigeria’s internal affairs following threats by former U.S. President Donald Trump to take military action against the West African nation.
Speaking in Beijing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning described Trump’s remarks as “irresponsible and dangerous,” saying they undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty and stability. He said China supports Nigeria’s right to manage its domestic issues without foreign intimidation.
“We urge the United States to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and avoid actions or statements that could escalate tensions or destabilize the region,” Ning stated.
Trump had earlier threatened to deploy U.S. troops or launch air strikes against Nigeria if the government failed to curb what he described as the “killing of Christians.” The former American leader claimed that Washington would no longer provide aid to Nigeria unless the government acted swiftly.
Nigeria’s government has since dismissed Trump’s statements as “provocative and misleading,” maintaining that it is addressing security challenges affecting all citizens regardless of religion.
China, which has become one of Nigeria’s major economic and infrastructure partners, reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and supporting Nigeria’s efforts toward peace and development.
Analysts say Beijing’s response reflects growing rivalry between China and the U.S. over influence in Africa, as both powers continue to expand their strategic interests across the continent.
