A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Kuje, Abuja, has granted bail to rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, alongside Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, and 11 others.
The defendants were arraigned on charges bordering on unlawful assembly and disturbance of public peace following their arrest during a protest demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
The court granted bail to all 13 defendants after their counsel argued that the offences were bailable and that the accused posed no flight risk.
However, shortly after the ruling, security operatives reportedly re-arrested Sowore outside the court premises and whisked him away in a waiting vehicle, despite the bail order.
The development has sparked public outrage among rights advocates who have described the re-arrest as a violation of the court’s decision. Further details on the case are expected in subsequent proceedings.
