The Cross River State House of Assembly has sacked Theresa Ushie, the chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council, following allegations of gross misconduct. The decision came after the Assembly adopted the report of its Committee on Judiciary and Public Petitions.
This decision came after the House Committee on Judiciary and Public Petitions submitted its report. The issue began on June 10, 2025, when eight Bekwarra councillors sent a petition accusing the council chairman, Theresa Ushie, of corruption, abuse of office, stopping councillors’ salaries without reason, and ignoring proper procedures in running the council.
Following the petition, the Assembly suspended Ushie for 90 days and asked the Vice Chairman, Egbung Odama, to take over temporarily while the committee carried out a full investigation.
With the chairman’s removal, the Bekwarra LG chair position is now vacant. Lawmakers have instructed the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) to organise a bye-election within 30 days to fill the post. The Speaker of the Assembly said the decision underscores the legislature’s commitment to accountability and good governance, emphasizing that no public office is above scrutiny.
However, ushie’s removal raises questions about transparency and accountability in local government. People are now watching to see who will become the new council chairman and whether the new leader can restore trust and good governance in Bekwarra Local Government.
