The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) is set to hold a pivotal National Executive Council meeting today to determine whether to launch a nationwide strike, as its 10-day ultimatum to the Federal Government expires.

The ultimatum, issued last week, cited unpaid salaries, poor working conditions, lack of equipment, and inadequate welfare. NARD warned of a nationwide strike if the issues weren’t resolved within 10 days.
As the deadline approaches, there is growing anxiety over the potential impact of another strike on Nigeria’s already strained public health system, which is battling chronic understaffing, aging infrastructure, and overcrowded hospitals.
NARD President, Dr. Ibrahim Oluwaseun, confirmed that the NEC meeting would be held today to assess the government’s response and determine the association’s next steps.
“Our members are frustrated,” he said. “We’ve exhausted all diplomatic channels. If the government fails to act responsibly, we will have no choice but to withdraw our services.”
The Federal Ministries of Health and Labour are yet to issue a public response to the ultimatum, though sources suggest behind-the-scenes talks may be underway to prevent a strike. Healthcare workers and civil society groups have called for a swift resolution, warning that another strike could severely impact patients and further undermine trust in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
A final decision is expected later today after the NEC meeting concludes.
