D’Tigress Gear Up for Thrilling Quarter-Final Battle Against Cameroon at the 2025 Afrobasket tournament to take place at the Palais Des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire tonight.
The clash comes after Cameroon secured an 85-64 victory over Angola on Wednesday, booking their spot in the final eight against the defending champions, Nigeria.
D’Tigress, who are aiming for a historic fifth consecutive Afrobasket title, booked their quarter-final spot with dominant wins over Rwanda and Mozambique. A victory in tonight’s clash would make them the first team ever to secure five straight Afrobasket championships.
Cameroon has previously posed a significant challenge to Nigeria, having defeated the D’Tigress in the 2015 semi-finals of the competition. Since that loss, however, Nigeria has remained unbeaten, clinching four consecutive Afrobasket crowns.
Under the guidance of Coach Rena Wakama, the Nigerian squad is poised to take another step toward extending their dominance in African women’s basketball when they meet Cameroon in the highly anticipated quarter-final.
While D’Tigress’ main focus is on the Afrobasket, they’ve also made a mark on the world stage. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Nigeria made history by becoming the first African women’s basketball team to reach the Olympic quarter-finals. Despite a brave performance, they bowed out to the United States in the last eight.
Nonetheless, Coach Rena Wakama has received widespread recognition for her efforts. Following Nigeria’s performance in Paris, Wakama was named Best Women’s Basketball Coach at the Olympics by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
In the previous Afrobasket edition, which Nigeria won in 2023, Wakama made history again as the first female coach to win the Women’s Afrobasket title, only months after being appointed to lead the team.
As reigning champions, Nigeria is determined to extend their Afrobasket dominance with the D’Tigress eyeing an unprecedented fifth straight title. Standing in their way, Cameroon promises to be a formidable opponent, making tonight’s quarter-final clash a high-stakes showdown for a spot in the semi-finals.
