Ebola Outbreak in Southern Congo Eases – WHO

The World Health Organization, WHO says the Ebola outbreak in southern Congo’s Kasai Province is easing, as no new cases have been recorded since October 1. The agency noted that ten days have passed without any new infections, showing that efforts to control the disease are starting to work.

In its latest report, the WHO said there have been 43 deaths, including 32 confirmed and 11 suspected. The outbreak, announced by Congo’s health authorities on September 4, is the first in the Kasai region in 18 years. The area lies over 1,000 kilometers from Kinshasa, making a quick health response difficult due to its remoteness and poor infrastructure.

Health officials had earlier cautioned that lack of funds and resources could hinder efforts to stop the outbreak. However, the WHO said things have improved through better planning, including air and ground delivery of medical supplies and the disinfection of three health centers.

Despite the progress, the WHO warned that the situation remains fragile, with nearly 2,000 contacts under monitoring and the risk that one missed case could spark new infections.
