EFCC Storms Abeokuta, Nabs 93 in Massive Cybercrime Raid

Ninety-three suspected internet fraudsters have been arrested in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during a coordinated sting operation by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The operation, carried out by personnel from the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, was based on what the agency described as credible intelligence linking the suspects to alleged cybercrime activities.

While the EFCC’s official statement did not reveal the exact location of the raid, eyewitnesses confirmed that the arrests occurred at the Green Legacy Hotel within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library complex.

Viral footage from the scene showed guests fleeing in panic as gunshots echoed in the background, sparking widespread reactions and debate across social media platforms.

According to the EFCC, the suspects were arrested on Sunday, August 10, and a number of valuable items were seized, including 18 vehicles and numerous mobile devices believed to have been used in the commission of internet-related crimes.

While witnesses at the scene alleged that more than 20 luxury vehicles were impounded, the EFCC has so far confirmed the recovery of 18, pending a full inventory.

The anti-graft agency noted that all 93 suspects are currently in custody and will be formally charged once investigations are completed.

The arrests mark another significant move in the EFCC’s intensified crackdown on cybercrime, especially among young Nigerians. Over the years, the agency has ramped up its operations across the country as it seeks to stem the growing tide of internet-related offences.
