FG Unveils Three New Education Policies to Improve Teaching, Almajiri Education and Fight Drug Abuse in Schools

The Federal Government has unveiled three major policy documents aimed at improving teacher development, strengthening Almajiri education and addressing rising cases of drug and substance abuse in schools across the country.

Yesterday, the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, together with the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, and representatives from UNESCO and the UK’s FCDO, launched three important education policies.

These policies include the National Teachers’ Policy, the National Policy on Almajiri Education, and the National Policy on Drug and Substance Abuse in Secondary and Tertiary Schools, each with clear guidelines for how they will be put into action.

The National Teachers Policy aims to improve teacher training, raise professional standards, and make it easier for teachers to get licensed. The ministry also plans to use digital platforms to help teachers continue learning and improving their skills across the country.

However, the government also launched the National Policy on Almajiri Education, designed to integrate out-of-school Almajiri children into a structured learning system. The policy provides guidelines for states to deliver targeted support and ensure vulnerable learners are not excluded from formal education.

In responding to growing concerns over addiction among young people, the National Policy on Drug and Substance Abuse in Schools was also unveiled. It provides a coordinated framework for prevention, counselling, intervention and sanctions within secondary and tertiary institutions.

Speaking at the event, the Education Minister said the ministry will focus more on putting policies into action rather than just creating them, following an “80% implementation, 20% policy development” approach. He urged state education officials to take the lead in carrying out the new policies, while the federal government provides guidance and support.

Also, the minister noted that effective implementation across states will determine the success of the reforms and improve learning outcomes nationwide.
