FRSC Issues Safety Alert on Dangers of Vehicle Overloading

On Monday, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) warned motorists, commercial drivers, and passengers nationwide against overloading vehicles and carrying passengers alongside goods, highlighting the increased risk of accidents and loss of lives associated with these unsafe practices.

In a public safety message posted on Monday via X, the FRSC warned that the growing practice of overloading and mixing passengers with goods remains a serious threat to lives and property on Nigerian roads. The warning was accompanied by photographs of overloaded vehicles, serving as a stark visual reminder of the real dangers involved.

“Carrying human beings alongside heavy loads not only exposes them to extreme risk but also destabilizes the vehicle, making it difficult for the driver to maintain proper control,” the FRSC stated.
“In the event of sudden braking, swerving, or a crash, lives can be lost instantly especially for those sitting on top of vehicles or in unsafe positions.”

According to the FRSC, a significant number of recent road deaths have been traced to overloading and dangerous transport practices, especially along rural and inter-state corridors.

The warning also pointed out that pushing vehicles beyond their limits doesn’t just endanger lives it breaks down the vehicle faster, weakens braking systems, and makes tire bursts more likely.

“Vehicles are built to carry specific loads. When these limits are exceeded, everyone on board and even other road users are placed in danger,” the FRSC warned.

The Corps urged drivers to adhere strictly to vehicle load limits, separate goods from passengers, and ensure that all occupants are properly seated within the vehicle. “No journey is worth a life lost. Choose safety first, avoid overloading, and protect lives,” the statement concluded.
