Legendary Italian fashion icon Giorgio Armani, the creative force behind one of the world’s most renowned luxury fashion empires, has passed away at the age of 91.
The Armani Group announced his passing in a statement released on Thursday, expressing profound sadness over the loss of its founder and visionary creative leader. “With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force; Giorgio Armani,” the company said.
Giorgio Armani, known as Il Signor Armani, has died peacefully surrounded by loved ones, his company confirmed. Born in 1934, he founded his Milan-based fashion house in 1975 and revolutionized global style with his minimalist, elegant designs.
He was one of the first designers to blend high fashion with mass-market appeal, launching successful sub-labels like Emporio Armani and expanding into lifestyle ventures including Armani Hotels and interior design.
“Indefatigable to the end, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects,” the Armani Group said.
Armani’s death comes just weeks ahead of the scheduled celebrations for the 50th anniversary of his iconic brand, marking half a century of innovation, elegance, and influence in global fashion.
Italy’s Culture Minister, Alessandro Giuli, honored Armani as a “leading figure in Italian culture” who turned fashion into a “universal language.”
“His understated and innovative style redefined the relationship between fashion, cinema, and society, leaving an indelible mark on contemporary culture,” Giuli said.
Giorgio Armani leaves behind a legacy that spans decades and continents, having dressed countless celebrities, dignitaries, and film stars, while shaping the very meaning of modern elegance. Armani Group announced that his funeral will be private, but a public memorial in Milan will be open Saturday and Sunday.
