Ibadan Shuts Down as Olubadan Oba Olakulehin Is Laid to Rest

In an unprecedented show of respect, Ibadan’s bustling markets came to a complete halt on Friday morning as the city mourned the passing of its revered monarch, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, who was laid to rest today.

The 43rd Olubadan died on July 7, 2025, just two days after his 90th birthday. In a statement, Babaloja General of Oyo State, Alhaji Yekeen Abass, ordered the market closure from 5 a.m. to 12 noon, urging traders to observe the mourning in respect of the monarch’s legacy of peace and development.

Final burial rites began Thursday with a lying-in-state at Mapo Hall, attended by traditional rulers, religious leaders, and dignitaries. A Christian wake followed at the Olubadan Palace in Oke-Aremo.

Tributes flowed from across Ibadan, with Femi Ibikunle, Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde, describing the monarch as “an astute and peace-loving leader,” while Chief Asimiyu Ariori, President of the Mogajis, hailed his life of service and enduring legacy.

Oba Olakulehin’s first son, Sunmbo Owolabi, thanked the people of Ibadan for their support and prayed for the city’s continued growth.

Though his reign was brief, Oba Olakulehin is remembered for his humility, unity, and service to Ibadanland.
