The Olubadan-In-Council has unanimously endorsed former Oyo State Governor, High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The ratification took place at the new Olubadan Palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan, following the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, on July 7, 2025.
Ladoja, who currently holds the title of Otun Olubadan the highest-ranking chief on the civil line automatically becomes next in line for the throne under the city’s age-long rotational succession system.
Announcing the endorsement, the Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Tajudeen Ajibola, said the council would forward Ladoja’s name to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for formal approval and subsequent coronation.
He expressed confidence in Ladoja’s ability to provide quality leadership, describing the former governor as one with “a wealth of experience and wisdom” to advance the progress, unity and development of Ibadanland.
Born on September 25, 1944, in Gambari village close to Ibadan, Ladoja received his secondary education at Ibadan Boys’ High School and Olivet Baptist High School. He later travelled to Belgium, graduating with a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Liège. Upon his return to Nigeria, he began his career with Total, before moving into private business and later pursuing a career in politics.
Ladoja served as Governor of Oyo State from May 2003 until his impeachment in January 2006, but was reinstated by the Supreme Court in December of that year, finishing his tenure in May 2007.
In August 2024, he accepted the beaded crown as Otun Olubadan in accordance with the revised Ibadan chieftaincy declaration a step he said cleared the path for his eventual ascension to the throne.
A public presentation ceremony is expected to hold soon, pending Governor Makinde’s official approval.
