The Labour Party has rejected any involvement in a protest planned for Wednesday, August 6, at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing the organisers as “impostors” and “political impersonators.”
Via a statement issued on Tuesday, signed by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, the Labour Party stated that it was neither aware of nor involved in the planned protest.
“The attention of the leadership of the Labour Party has been drawn to an invitation circulating in certain quarters regarding a purported protest, We wish to categorically state that the said protest is not sanctioned by the Labour Party,” the statement read. It added that the individuals behind the protest were not recognised by the party and lacked any form of authorisation or backing from its leadership.
“The organisers are unknown to the party’s leadership, and the action lacks the approval and backing of the party,” it stated, warning that anyone participating in or promoting the protest does so without the consent of the Labour Party and should be seen as an ”impostor.”
The party also referenced the recent rejection by INEC of a list of candidates submitted by the party’s former national chairman, Julius Abure, and his associates for the upcoming national bye-elections and local council polls.
According to the statement, the party welcomed INEC’s decision to reject what it described as an “illegitimate list,” expressing confidence that the electoral body would proceed to accept the list submitted by its current leadership.
The Labour Party further urged INEC to uphold a Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, which it said affirmed the expiration of Abure’s tenure as national chairman on June 8, 2023.
The party called on the Commission to update its official platforms and portals to reflect the current, court-recognised leadership. In addition, it appealed to security agencies to take note of the situation and act accordingly.
