On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Nigerian artist Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, publicly addressed the death of his former signee, Promise Aloba, also known as Mohbad, stating in a newly released documentary that he had no involvement in the singer’s death and refuting allegations linking him to the incident.

In a documentary released on Wednesday, Naira Marley shared how Mohbad started his music career under Marlian Music and responded to several rumors about their relationship and the singer’s death on September 12, 2023.
Naira Marley insisted that he never bullied or harmed Mohbad, revealing that in June 2020, he warned the singer about the dangers of using “Ice” (crack cocaine) after learning about his drug use. “I advised him because I’ve witnessed the damage it caused to people I know in the UK. He said he started due to stress but promised to stop,” Marley explained. He also provided evidence that Mohbad selected his own manager and that their financial arrangements were transparent, with profits split evenly between them.
Naira Marley recalled a 2022 NDLEA raid where Mohbad was detained after a clash with officers. He later made accusations during a livestream under duress but eventually apologized.
He revealed that Mohbad struggled with mental health challenges, including a suicide attempt in March 2022, and that efforts were made to support him with health checks and medication.
According to Naira Marley, tensions rose after Mohbad fell out with his manager in October 2022 and attempted to leave Marlian Music, withdrawing $72,000 in royalties without approval. He said the last time he saw Mohbad was on October 4, 2022 and that he was in Amsterdam at the time of the singer’s death and has since criticized authorities for not arresting those who were with Mohbad in the 24 to 48 hours leading up to his passing.
Legal proceedings have cleared Naira Marley and others of blame, as investigations continue, Naira Marley remains adamant about his innocence and the need to uncover the truth behind Mohbad’s death.
