NECO to Begin Computer-Based Exams in November 2025

NECO has announced that starting from the November/December 2025 SSCE External, all its exams will be conducted using a Computer-Based Testing (CBT) format. This marks the end of the traditional paper-and-pencil method, which has been in use for decades.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, NECO confirmed that it has finalized plans to fully transition to the Computer-Based Testing (CBT) format. This development aligns with the Federal Government’s broader strategy, announced in July, to implement computer-based exams for both NECO and WAEC by 2026.

To support the transition, NECO has called on interested Computer-Based Testing (CBT) centre operators nationwide to apply for registration. The Council emphasized that only centres meeting stringent standards in technology, infrastructure, and security will be approved.

The mandatory specifications include; A minimum of 150 functional computer systems or laptops, with 10% backup systems, Well-structured examination cubicles and air-conditioned halls, High-capacity servers to support exam operations, CCTV surveillance with IP cameras for real-time monitoring, Reliable internet connectivity, specifically from MTN or Airtel.

NECO stated that comprehensive registration guidelines covering hall dimensions, system requirements, and other technical specifications have already been provided to prospective operators.

The Council stated that adopting the CBT format will boost efficiency, strengthen exam security, and help curb malpractice. Although there are ongoing concerns about infrastructure readiness in some areas, NECO assured that the rollout will be carefully monitored to ensure a smooth and successful nationwide implementation.

With this development, NECO becomes the latest examination body in Nigeria to embrace digital testing, signaling a major milestone in the modernization of the country’s education system.
