As Nigeria commemorated its 65th Independence anniversary on Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu used the occasion to reflect on the country’s progress and highlight key achievements of his administration since assuming office 28 months ago.
In his address from the Presidential Villa, President Tinubu highlighted key reforms including fuel subsidy removal, exchange rate unification, and investment-driven policies aimed at correcting structural economic imbalances in the country.
He said that although the policies have been tough at first, they are starting to show positive results. He pointed to better management of public funds, a slow rise in the country’s foreign reserves, and growing interest from investors. He added that the government’s economic plan focuses on stability, fairness, and long-term growth.
Tinubu also pointed to ongoing projects in infrastructure, agriculture, and social welfare as proof of his administration’s push for economic change. He highlighted programs like cash transfers to poor households, wage support for government workers, and youth empowerment schemes as steps taken to ease the hardship caused by recent reforms.
While acknowledging the economic difficulties many citizens continue to face, the President called for patience and unity, assuring Nigerians that the reforms will ultimately lead to a more resilient and equitable economy.
“As we celebrate 65 years of nationhood, let us draw strength from our collective history and renew our commitment to the vision of a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria,” he said.
The 65th Independence Day celebrations were held quietly nationwide as the government prioritized cost-cutting due to economic difficulties. However, the President’s speech focused on inspiring optimism and reaffirming his administration’s commitment to rebuilding the nation.
