Hundreds of members of Peoples Democratic Party from all 17 local government areas of Plateau State on Monday converged at the State Secretariat Junction in Jos to stage a mass rally calling on Governor Caleb Mutfwang to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The Sunday rally in the state capital drew crowds of supporters who marched with placards and chanted slogans urging the governor to defect to the APC.
The group, identifying themselves as concerned PDP members, cited what they described as the governor’s poor performance and alleged misalignment with the party’s values as reasons for urging him to leave the party.
They argued that the governor would be better suited to the APC, claiming that his administration’s policies and approach to governance were more in line with the ruling party’s ideology than with PDP principles.
However, during the rally, participants displayed banners and placards with messages urging Governor Mutfwang to defect while some other protesters expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC-led federal government.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who clinched the 2023 governorship seat under the PDP after a fiercely contested race against the APC, has focused his administration on improving security, boosting infrastructure, and fostering unity among the state’s diverse ethnic groups. The rally comes at a time of heightened political maneuvering in Plateau, with the APC stepping up efforts to strengthen its foothold in the state and attract key opposition members.
As at the time of this report, Governor Mutfwang and the Plateau PDP have not yet reacted to the rally or the calls for him to defect.
