On Monday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a major healthcare intervention by reducing the cost of kidney dialysis from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000 per session in federal hospitals across Nigeria, aiming to ease the financial burden on patients and improve access to life-saving treatment nationwide.
The announcement was made on Monday by Daniel Bwala, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Information, through his official X account.
Bwala said the initiative, now active nationwide, will bring quick relief to thousands battling kidney disease. “With this intervention, the price of each dialysis session has been reduced from ₦50,000 to just ₦12,000, bringing relief to thousands of citizens battling kidney-related diseases,” Bwala wrote.
Hospitals that have already started implementing this subsidy include; the Federal Medical Centre(FMC) Ebute-Metta, Lagos, FMC Jabi, Abuja, UCH Ibadan, LUTH Lagos, UCTH Calabar, FMC Owerri amongst others.
The special adviser also added that more federal hospitals will join the programme by the end of the year to improve nationwide access.
This follows Tinubu’s earlier approval of free C-sections in federal hospitals to reduce maternal deaths and support pregnant women.
“Together, these measures demonstrate the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda in action ensuring that no Nigerian is denied healthcare because of cost,” Bwala stated.
These health-focused interventions by the President are regarded as essential measures to eliminate financial obstacles that hinder access to timely medical care, especially for individuals suffering from chronic or life-threatening illnesses like kidney failure.
The decision has been widely applauded by health experts, who say it offers a lifeline to financially struggling patients, long excluded from life-saving dialysis treatment.
