Stakeholders Call on Akwa Ibom Governor to Fast-track NYSC Camp Renovation

Stakeholders in Akwa Ibom State have urged Governor Umo Eno to expedite the upgrade of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Ikot Itie Udung, Nsit-Antai Local Government Area, emphasizing the need to provide a conducive environment for corps members.

The call comes amid plans by the state government to reconstruct and modernize the camp to meet international standards. According to reports, the upgraded facility will include improved accommodation, recreational amenities, and modern infrastructure aimed at enhancing the welfare of corps members during their mandatory national service.

Governor Eno has also announced plans to establish youth-friendly hubs across all 31 local government areas in the state. The hubs, which are expected to feature solar power and internet access, will serve as centers for skill acquisition, entrepreneurship, and digital engagement for young people.

In addition, the state government has increased the monthly allowance for corps members from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000, reflecting a commitment to improving their welfare. Officials have reassured corps members of their safety and protection against harassment while in the state.

Civil society groups and other stakeholders have commended the governor’s initiatives but stressed the importance of fast-tracking the projects to ensure that corps members immediately benefit from the improved facilities.

The Akwa Ibom NYSC camp has traditionally served as a key center for corps members in the South-South, and the upcoming renovations are set to greatly improve their orientation experience.
