Teenager Takes on Role of Nigeria’s ‘Vice President for a Day’

In a powerful and symbolic gesture, Vice President Kashim Shettima vacated his seat for a day, allowing Nigerian teenager Joy Ogah to step in and speak up for the rights, safety, and education of girls across the country.

The event took place on Monday when PLAN International visited the Vice President’s office. It was meant to help raise the voices of young girls and draw attention to the problems they face. The visit was led by Helen Mfonobong Idiong, who is a director at PLAN International.

While sitting in the Vice President’s chair, Joy Ogah gave a passionate speech about the need to invest more in education for Nigerian children, especially girls. She mentioned that out of over 10.5 million children in Nigeria who are not in school, more than 60% of them are girls.

“We must invest in education that is safe and inclusive for every child in Nigeria”. “Girls deserve to learn in environments, free from fear, discrimination, and violence. Our future depends on it.” Ogah said.

She urged government leaders, organisations, and partners to focus on programs that protect and support young girls, so they can get a good education and have equal chances to succeed.

In his remarks, Vice President Shettima praised Joy Ogah for her bravery and leadership. He said the government is committed to making Nigeria safer and more welcoming for all children. He also thanked PLAN International for its efforts in supporting children’s rights and promoting equality for girls.

The symbolic takeover was part of PLAN International’s #GirlsTakeover campaign, which lets girls step into leadership roles to highlight issues affecting them.
