Thailand is mourning the death of its former queen, Queen Sirikit, who passed away late on Friday, October 24, 2025, at the age of 93. The royal palace confirmed her passing in an official statement on Saturday.
Queen Sirikit, the widow of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, was widely revered as the “Mother of the Nation.” Her birthday, celebrated annually on August 12, was officially designated as Thailand’s Mother’s Day, reflecting her deep connection to the Thai people and her lasting influence on the nation’s cultural and social life.
The palace announced that her son, King Maha Vajiralongkorn, has declared a year-long mourning period to honor her memory. Flags across the country will fly at half-mast, and special ceremonies are expected to take place in Bangkok and other provinces in the coming days.
Queen Sirikit played a significant role in modernizing Thailand’s image during her time as consort, often accompanying her husband on international diplomatic missions and promoting Thai arts, crafts, and traditional fashion abroad. Her grace and advocacy for cultural preservation earned her admiration both locally and internationally.
Her passing marks the end of an era for Thailand’s royal family, which has been a symbol of unity for decades. Tributes have poured in from world leaders and citizens alike, celebrating a queen remembered for her devotion, compassion, and strength.
