President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday administered the oath of office to the new chairman of the National Population Commission, Aminu Yusuf, along with two commissioners and five permanent secretaries.
The swearing-in ceremony took place during the opening segment of the Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa, with cabinet members in attendance.
Yusuf, who hails from Niger State, was confirmed by the Senate on October 22, 2025, to lead the population commission. He replaces Nasir Isa Kwara, who had served as chairman since his appointment in 2020.
Also sworn in were two commissioners of the commission: Joseph Haruna Kigbu from Nasarawa State and Tonga Betara Bularafa from Yobe State. Both commissioners were confirmed by the Senate alongside Yusuf.
However, the President’s approval of Yusuf’s appointment had earlier received the endorsement of the Council of State in October before being forwarded to the Senate for confirmation. Five permanent secretaries from different federal ministries were also sworn in during the brief ceremony.
The National Population Commission is tasked with carrying out population and housing censuses, managing the national population database, and overseeing all population-related activities in Nigeria.
