UK Set to Introduce Stricter Rules for Migrants Seeking Permanent Residency

The UK government is preparing to roll out stricter criteria for migrants applying for permanent residency, with new rules set to be announced by the interior minister on Monday requiring applicants to have a job, avoid welfare benefits, and perform community service.

Currently, migrants can apply for “indefinite leave to remain” after five years if they have family ties, or after 10 years of legal residence on any visa. The proposed changes aim to promote self-sufficiency and civic contribution, making the path to settlement more stringent.

The move comes as the government faces growing pressure to curb immigration and reduce strain on public services. Critics warn the reforms could unfairly impact law-abiding migrants, while officials argue they will ensure only active contributors to society gain permanent residency.

Additional details will be revealed after the minister’s address to Parliament.
