UPDATED: FG Declares Friday, Public Holiday for Eid-ul-Mawlid Celebration

The Federal Government has announced Friday, September 5, 2025, as a public holiday in observance of Eid-ul-Mawlid, which commemorates the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

The announcement was issued on Wednesday in a statement released by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The Minister extended warm greetings to Muslims across the country and in the diaspora, urging them to reflect on the Prophet’s exemplary virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion.

“The celebration of Eid-ul-Mawlid offers us yet another opportunity to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, promote peaceful coexistence, and imbibe the Prophet’s teachings of mutual respect and selfless service to humanity,” the statement read.

He also called on all Nigerians, regardless of their religious background, to use the occasion to pray for the nation’s peace, security, and stability while stressing the importance of unity and urged collective support for government efforts aimed at achieving sustainable development.

Eid-ul-Mawlid, which falls in the Islamic month of Rabi’ al-Awwal, is widely commemorated in Nigeria with prayers, sermons, processions, and charitable activities. It is officially observed as a national public holiday, highlighting the country’s longstanding tradition of honoring key Islamic celebrations.

The Federal Government extends its best wishes to all Muslims for a joyful and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration.
