UPDATED: Ibom Air Passenger Discharged

A Lagos magistrate court has freed Comfort Emmanson, the woman at the center of the Ibom Air in-flight incident, after prosecutors dropped all charges against her.

The decision was made on Wednesday at the Ikeja Magistrate Court sitting in Ogba, where Magistrate Olanrewaju Salami struck out the five-count charge against Emmanson. Her discharge followed an application by the police prosecution team, citing new developments in the matter.

The lead prosecutor, Oluwabunmi Adeitan, announced that Ibom Air had withdrawn its complaint, leading to the case’s dismissal. The court approved the motion without opposition and ordered Emmanson freed immediately.

The incident, which occurred on August 10, had drawn public attention after Emmanson was accused of disruptive behavior mid-flight, leading to her arrest and arraignment. She was granted ₦500,000 bail with two sureties, but was remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre after failing to meet the bail conditions.

Earlier this week, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), announced that a resolution had been reached following consultations with stakeholders and consideration of public appeals.

“After reviewing the circumstances and considering the remorse shown by the parties involved, a consensus was reached to resolve the matter amicably,” Keyamo stated. Ibom Air, in alignment with the ministry’s position, agreed to withdraw its complaint, paving the way for the court’s decision.

With the charges now dropped, Emmanson has been freed, effectively closing the case.
