WAEC Faces Backlash Over Poor Results, English Failures, and Portal Shutdown

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is under intense criticism after temporarily shutting down its result checker portal on Wednesday evening due to “technical issues.” This development adds to growing public frustration over the 2025 WASSCE results, with English Language drawing the most concern.

WAEC announced that only 38.32% of the 1.97 million candidates earned credit passes in five key subjects including English and Mathematics the worst result in over a decade.

The sharp drop in English performance has sparked widespread suspicion, particularly after reports that the English exam on May 28 was delayed until late in the evening at several centres, forcing students to write under poor conditions.

Social media platforms have been flooded with complaints from candidates and parents, many of whom reported passing other subjects but failing English. Some alleged score manipulation, while others called for a full review or remarking of scripts.

“My daughter got five A1s and two B2s, but scored D7 in English,” one parent tweeted.

Some have demanded government intervention and even a recall of the 2025 results.

As of Thursday, WAEC had not responded to the calls for a review or provided further clarification on the English Language grading.
