Qatar has introduced a new visa restriction that bars Nigerian men from obtaining tourist or transit visas unless they are accompanied by family members. The policy, which took effect around September 5, 2025, was confirmed by multiple travel agencies and industry insiders and has already affected pending and new visa applications.
Under the new rules, only Nigerian women and families are eligible to apply for visas to Qatar. In addition, applicants must provide proof of confirmed return flights and accommodation exclusively in five-star hotels before their visa applications will be considered.
Qatari authorities say the decision is aimed at curbing overstays and immigration violations, reportedly more common among solo male travelers. However, the move has sparked widespread criticism in Nigeria, particularly from business travelers, students, and those who use Qatar as a transit hub to destinations in Asia and Europe.
“This is going to disrupt a lot of plans,” said Seyi Adebanjo, a Lagos-based travel consultant. “Qatar is a major connecting point, and now many Nigerian men will have to look for more expensive or less convenient alternatives.”
Several Nigerian travelers have already had visa applications rejected, with no explanation beyond non-compliance with the new criteria. Travel agencies in Lagos and Abuja report a spike in cancellations and urgent inquiries from affected clients.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to issue an official statement, but sources indicate that diplomatic talks are ongoing with Qatari authorities to seek clarification on the new policy and explore the possibility of a reversal.
