Tinubu Set to Appoint New Ambassadors as Tension With U.S. Grows

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to announce a fresh list of ambassadorial nominees as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic presence abroad and address growing tensions with the United States.

This comes as Nigeria faces rising diplomatic tension with the United States after former U.S. President Donald Trump threatened military action against Nigeria over alleged attacks on Christians.

Sources at the Presidential Villa said the list of new ambassadors is almost ready. The nominees have been screened and checked by security agencies, and the final list will soon be approved by President Tinubu.

One senior official said the appointments had become urgent, given Nigeria’s current diplomatic challenges, particularly the ongoing friction with the United States following recent comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump threatening military action over alleged persecution of Christians.

“The timing of the new appointments is strategic,” the source said. “Nigeria needs strong diplomatic voices across the world, especially at a time when our relationship with major partners is under scrutiny.”

Tinubu had earlier admitted that compiling the ambassadorial list was difficult due to the need to balance political interests, regional representation, and professional qualifications.

Nigeria currently maintains 109 foreign missions, including embassies, high commissions, and consulates. Analysts say the appointment of new ambassadors will help restore Nigeria’s international influence and ensure its interests are effectively represented in global affairs.
