Prominent Islamic Scholar Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi Is Dead

Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, one of Nigeria’s most revered Islamic scholars and a leading figure in the Tijjaniyya order, has passed away.

News of his death emerged Thursday morning, with confirmations from family members and close associates of the respected cleric. Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to late President Muhammadu Buhari, announced the passing on social media, describing the Sheikh as a revered leader whose contributions to Islamic scholarship in Nigeria were immeasurable.

The Sheikh’s son, Sayyadi Ali Dahiru Usman Bauchi, confirmed his father’s death in an interview, stating that the cleric had “returned to his creator.” Also speaking from Madinah, Saudi Arabia, the younger son expressed gratitude for his father’s long life and well-spent years in service. He indicated that a decision on whether burial would take place in Abuja or Bauchi was yet to be finalized.

Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi built a reputation not only as a religious leader but also as a humanitarian committed to education and community development across northern Nigeria.

Just last month, his foundation facilitated scholarships for 117 northern Nigerian students to pursue medicine and engineering degrees in Algeria. The fully funded programme was secured through collaboration between the Tariqa Tijjaniyya Islamic Sect and the Algerian Government.

The late scholar maintained strong relationships with Nigeria’s political leadership. In 2021, the then-President Muhammadu Buhari received him at the State House in Abuja, underscoring his influence and respect across religious and political spheres.

He also served as Deputy Chairman of the Fatwa Committee of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs in Nigeria. The Islamic community in Nigeria and beyond is expected to mourn the loss of one of its most distinguished scholars in the coming days.
