The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, is set to install Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland on Sunday, December 21, 2025.
The installation ceremony, according to palace sources, will take place in Oyo town and is expected to draw traditional rulers, political leaders, and dignitaries from across the South-West and beyond. The title of Okanlomo is regarded as a significant honor within the Yoruba traditional hierarchy, symbolising leadership and service to the people.
Also, Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari, representing Zamfara West, will be installed as the “Obaloyin of Yorubaland” at the ceremony. The Alaafin’s media aide, Bode Durojaiye, confirmed the chieftaincy installation in a telephone interview on Wednesday, stating that a press statement would be released soon.
“Okanlomo of Yorubaland” is a prestigious title meaning “the one dear to the hearts of all Yoruba people,” signifying deep affection and importance to the Yoruba race.
The planned installation comes months after a similar title caused controversy among leading Yoruba monarchs. Earlier this year, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, gave the title of “Okanlomo of Oduduwa” to Ibadan-born philanthropist, Dotun Sanusi.
The move led to a disagreement between the Alaafin of Oyo and the Ooni of Ife over traditional authority. However, the dispute was later settled after interventions by key Yoruba leaders and regional stakeholders.
More recently, the Ooni of Ife gave the title “Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua” to First Lady Remi Tinubu during events marking his 10th coronation anniversary. A title that was once held by the late Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, the wife of renowned statesman Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
The title recognises leadership, influence, and meaningful contributions to society, especially within the Yoruba cultural community.
