In a grand ceremony that brought together Nigeria’s political elite and traditional rulers, Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, received one of Yorubaland’s most cherished titles on Sunday.
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, installed the younger Tinubu as the “Okanlomo of Yorubaland” during an elaborate event at his palace in Oyo town, marking yet another chapter in the intersection of traditional authority and contemporary Nigerian politics.

The installation ceremony, held in Oyo town, attracted a large gathering of traditional rulers, political leaders and other dignitaries from across the country, reflecting the significance of the occasion.
The title Okanlomo of Yorubaland is regarded as a prestigious honour within Yoruba traditional institutions and is often bestowed on individuals considered to embody values of compassion, service and commitment to the unity and progress of the Yoruba people.
While speaking at the ceremony, the Alaafin described the installation as a recognition of character and responsibility, urging the new title holder to remain committed to the promotion of Yoruba culture and the welfare of the people.
Senator Abdulaziz Yari wasn’t left out of the honors as he too received a chieftaincy title at the same ceremony, being installed as the “Obaloyin of Yorubaland.”
The event combined traditional customs with modern style and showed that traditional rulers still play an important role in Nigeria’s culture and society.
