A major tug-of-war is brewing in African football, with Angola making an audacious play for the man currently steering Nigeria’s Super Eagles to glory.
According to DAILY POST, the Angolan Football Federation has set its sights on Malian coach Eric Chelle, aiming to lure him away from his successful post with Nigeria. Chelle’s stock has soared following the Super Eagles’ impressive and attractive style of play at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, capturing the attention of federations and fans across the continent.
Now, Angola is putting serious money on the table to get their man. As reported by SCORENigeria, the Angolan Federation is prepared to double Chelle’s current monthly salary of $50,000, offering a staggering $100,000 a month to take charge of their national team. This bold move comes as Chelle still has one year remaining on his contract with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
The push from Angola is driven by a desperate need for revival. Their national team, the Palancas Negras, suffered a disappointing early exit from the group stages of AFCON 2025. In stark contrast to Nigeria’s vibrant campaign, Angola’s poor outing has sparked a determined effort to secure a top-tier manager who can transform their fortunes, making Chelle their prime target.
